For Tony Leon, Helen Suzman, F. Van Zyl Slabbert
With elections fast approaching in South Africa, and the tremendously shocking events of the past few weeks, with the NPA dropping charges, this little bog has had a lot of visitors to “Zille Watch”, a relatively light hearted approach to the DA policy for our rainbow nation.
Zille Watch was not really calculated, it just, sort of, happened. It was a result of an article I wrote called koeksusters for africa or zille’s unbearable lightness of being, which was immensely popular with my readership, small as it was then, for this site is only 3 months old, and was then only days into its existence.
Zille Watch was going to be a short set of pieces, perhaps 2 or 3, but it grew into something much bigger. Today you will find links to it on serious sites, like The Freedom of Expression Institute as well as various USA sites. It remains perennially popular. Some readers just read that, regularly.
The curious thing is, it was written, not about Helen Zille, so much as Tony Leon. I wanted to illustrate, how, the very intelligent, and careful politics of our official opposition under Mr Tony Leon, had been hijacked by, what I was to end up calling, Helen Zille’s politics of idiocy.
Who knew she would give me so much ammunition ?

Oops, Methinks I cocked it up a bit.
Today the DA of old, the natural inheritor of Leon, Van Zyl Slabbert, and the late, great Helen Suzman, lies in tatters. The new DA, with its personality cult of Zille, is in deed a different animal.
It has always been my contention, that this decision to turn the DA into a focus group, tres-Hollywood road show, with a botoxed up, singing, dancing sideshow chimp like Super Silly Zille would cost them dearly in the upcoming elections.
Time will soon tell.
Many old DA stalwarts, and supporters, some of them, my friends have been excluded from the DA’s new face, which has 18 year olds on the ballot, and dim witted, farcical sycophants like Lindiwe Mazibuko, who recently told us “Helen Zille is the Bomb.”
I too, have taken an unfair swipe at David Unterhalter, long time intellectual capital behind the DA (Calling him, her side kick) I apologise for that now.I assumed he was part of that crazy band wagon of Zille madness. I have changed my mind. I have been listening very carefully to Mr. Unterhalter recently, and I have to say, he sounds like the old DA. The DA of Slabbert and Suzman. He is reasoned, careful, extremely intelligent, well presented and a very formidable debater and political thinker. He is certainly nobody’s sidekick, least of all our very own tin lady. It must be hard for him, to watch those years of work trampled on by Bullish Zille and her posse of teenagers. And i mean years, for Mr Unterhlater SC has been a serious, driving, intellectual warrior for the old DA , since my first encounter with him, personally, over 1o years ago. He upset me then, I was young, who knew that the madness of his night would visit me in mine?I’m sorry David. We can have better dialogue now.I never dreamed that I would one day miss people like you in the opposition.
Who knew ?
Which begs the question ?

David Unterhalter S.C. is an eloquent, brilliant legal and political mind, and long time intellectual capital for the DA.. why not him?
Why is he not leader of the official opposition?
I may not agree with him, but I can respect him, and too, I could vote for him, if only as a vote of check, to keep a strong opposition, which we so desperately need.
The wholesale chucking out of the staple of our old DA, intellectualism, for this new pop culture poppie-cum-Marvel-superhero from Cape Town is astonishing.
It’s justified by the DA on Helen’s performance as mayor of Cape Town. Cape Town, with its very Eurocentric white population, and pseudo Rivera society is a far cry from the rest of South Africa. They love her there.
She sticks in the throats of many other South Africans, around the country.

The wisdom of Helen Suzman - Out for Zilly's Idiocy
If, becoming a multi racial party was the intention, why pick a Maggie Thacheresque woman, who flourishes only when she is baring her teeth, who looks about as at home with black people, in her many staged photo ops, as a gravy covered cat in a barn yard full of hound dogs?
A friend of mine, told me the other day, with sadness written deeply over his visage, after having been a pinnacle force for the DA/PFP etc with his own international acclaim for decades, “ I tried to reason with Helen , about why this was bad, so much so, that she no longer talks to me. It’s something of a disaster. I will vote DA again, whom else can I vote for. But it’s very sad.”
Too true my friend.
My opponents within DA ranks tell me that this move has been highly researched, and that the new DA is backed by serious think tank type research and investigation.
Really ?
It’s true too. They are.
But I fear they have made a serious miscalculation.
The focus group, their mainstay, is notoriously fickle. To have promised them the country, in a “Vote to Win” campaign, ignoring the possibility that Zuma may not face trial, was a huge, stupid gamble. One they could not hope to win.

Clever and Charming - Tony Leon
All that is left is despondency for your voter now.
Even before he votes, he has lost, and he knows it.
I remember Lindiwe Mazibuku’s words some time back, while she was enthusing about her Bomb, Helen Zille, (In our Daily News Tues 17 Feb) where she castigated Tony Leon, for his “obsession” with struggle politics, while she lauded Dippy Dim Wit Zille for her downgraded politics of insanity, that appealed to her childish mind. This from the DA’s very own media officer..
She too, giggled and gushed, at Mr. Leon’s expense, how her new found, brand new Zille DA meant that ““…this means that a …relative nobody like me can run for election alongside party stalwarts…with my skill set, like their experience.”
My mind boggled then. The sheer absurd, and titanic cheek. The audacity of that statement. The damn, self indulgent ignorance of it. The self serving precociousness. The massive, deep lack of political savvy. The very ugly stupidity, and the terrible consequences that it invited, in it’s wake of damn foolishness.
Helen endorsed this with her silence and continued support for her child protege and alienating cock up, Lindiwe.
Perhaps because she is black.
Who cares ?
It was a terrible indictment.
For real heros of democracy, like Leon, to suffer such indignity, at the hands of such impunity .
It smarted. Dammit man, this is serious stuff. Why, dear God, why was the very tender art of opposition politics, which keeps us from the edge of the abyss, left to amateurish, moronic baboons like Lindiwe and Zille ?
Whom shall we blame in the aftermath ?
Helen, Helen Zille !!!
Thats who.
And all the power hungry, realpolitik twits who voted her in as DA honcho !!
Damn them, and their grandiose vision, riding on the back of coalition compromise and reactionary realpolitik.
Theirs is an inheritance of shame.
Their euro-cape-insanity may cost us our dearly needed, deeply loved, true opposition, at the hands of greedy, power hungry dimwits.
What a price to pay?
The elections are almost here. Helen Zille is campaigning for Mayor and Official Opposition.
Perhaps the DA will lose both.
Sad.
I say sad, because the grim realities of politics in South Africa leave only 2 options for opposition parties, currently, you can either be the clever vote, that votes for democracy, that votes for effective opposition, and you sell that with intellectual savvy, and a platform of morality, and even custodianship of the democracy.
You sell it, dear reader, like Tony Leon, Van Zyl Slabbert, and Helen Suzeman, with righteousness, deeply held conviction, intellect and the very considered politics of freedom. You sell it as leaders of thought, holders of the duty of democracy. You sell it, just like they did with clever response, and ideas. And you end up with the opposition bowing its knee to your clever, moral, and intelligent crusade for that one thing we all need, democracy. You don’t even need to sell it, for the kind of stuff they used to sell in SA opposition politics before Chimp, chump, the botoxed monkey from Cape Town Zille arrived, sells itself.
Or you can be the vote for reactionary politics.
And you sell that one, with the politics of aggression, you play on the fears of your electorate and not your ideas, you convince the electorate that a vote for the opposition is a vote for the end of life itself. You sing and dance, you say reactionary stuff, and you make promises that you cannot fulfill. You focus your voters on destroying the enemy.
You play realpolitik, which you set to theme tune. You run around, like a Hollywood celebrity wannabe, and you sing tit for tat songs, to show the “Blacks” that you can be like JZ. All the while you growl about the other. The evil other. You try and paint yourself with home made , messianic body paint.

The considered politics of Van Zyl Sabbert
You tell the world that you can stem the tide of the evil machinations of the devil that you oppose. You cry foul. You cry anything. Just so long as you oppose. And you botox yourself up, get a wardrobe consultant, and you spit hatred, fear and foolishness in the faces of you opponents. You talk about “truth” and you thump your theme, day and night, from court room to dining room, and taxi rank to township, and all the while you keep your private paparazzi on hand… to rewrite reality for power’s sake.
And you hope to hell, that they don’t see through your botox veil.
Under Mr Leon, the first was true.
Under Zille, it’s so obviously the 2nd, no?
The DA backed the wrong horse.
Time will soon tell.
In any event, TheTroublemakerTimes sheds a tear, and has a moment of silence, for the greatness that has gone before, soon to be erased by you know who.
Sies man.

I have to chip in here:
At my first ever political meeting (circa 1967 – Parktown, Johannesburg) I heard the Young Progs deliver so much “clever rhetoric” that I wanted to puke – for when one tries to sell the privileged liberal politics of the economical powerhouses – it is glaringly obvious that they know nothing about the “other side” … the disenfranchised whom they patronise – by talking over their heads – ala Helen Suzman, Nadine Gordimer, et al – to be regurgitated by mouthy Tony Leon decades later.
So, after many decades (eons) it is little wonder that the DA has been renamed the Dinosaur Party – for Tony Leon and Patricia De Lille 78rpm rantings (from platforms of privilege) make one want to change the channel and move into the 21st Century.
By constantly attacking everything the ANC has done since 1994 – all the time waiting for your entitlement to be delivered – you guys are flogging a dead horse … remain caught up in your “Time-Warp” mentality.
Patricia De Lille is beginning to look like/sound like that insipid Sarah Palin imbecile from Alaska.

Owen, thankyou for the comment, reasoned and justified positions have been a little rare on this blog since `i went to “war” with the racist Doberman and his twits.
Having said that, I think you are unduly harsh, sure I know what you mean, but you agree, no doubt that we need a strong opposition.
Intellectually strong.
White, privileged people are also born here, they also have a right to represent their interests.
They have been essential.
I have never voted for them.
Helen Zille is a bad move for them.
Cape Town -
Unlike many other VIPs, Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille stood in a queue when she went to vote on Wednesday, instead of going straight to the front.
She arrived at St Paul’s Anglican Church, a few blocks from her home in the leafy Cape Town suburb of Rondebosch, at 08:00 sharp along with her husband, academic Johann Maree and their two sons.
She joined the line of about 100 people, most of whom burst into applause when they saw her.
Zille, who is also city mayor, told a large continent of journalists that it had been a long and hard campaign and it was now “up to the voters”.
Speaking from her place in the queue, she said the DA expected to win the Western Cape outright and to remain the official opposition nationally.
There was also a possibility that the DA would govern the province as part of a coalition.
But she said: “I am confident that the DA will emerge as the largest party in the province.”
Asked whether the DA’s “Stop Zuma” campaign was negative, she said: “Jacob Zuma is what’s negative.”
He had scrapped the Scorpions and was now attacking Constitutional Court judges, among other things.
“He is a one-man Constitution-wrecking machine. What he says and what he does are two different things. He is negative, not the DA.”
Asked if she had a message for the voters, she said: “My message is, vote to win.”
Zille was in the queue for just under half an hour before she cast her vote.

Anti Crime :
2 Points:
1 – Are you oblivious to Public Relations, that was so obviously a choreographed moment. Helen is a master of those.
2 – “Vote to win” ?????
Vote to win what ?
Not the country?
And if you win the opposition, the Mrs Zille will remain mayor, and who will lead the DA. Seremane is going to retire.
Huh?
PS Nelson Mandela has never stood in a line to vote.
Whats your point ?
When reading you replies to comments I see that the only comments you consider well reasoned are those that agree with you.
Otherwise I have a question: Are you not sickened by the fact that the ANC is abusing Nelson Mandela who is clearly very frail and seemingly senile. I am almost positive that if he truly realised what was going on he would not stand for the ANC.
The ANC of his day is totally different of what it is today.
I will pose a question that I asked before and that you failed to answer: Since you believe that Africans are so successful in government can you name one single African country that has had a stable, non-corrupt government and managed good economic growth and a low crime rate?
Who says they are abusing him >
You?
Have you spoken with him recently?
What evidence do you have of senility ?
I am not prepared to engage you on the premise of racism. Its an old, outdated argument.
You pompouse twit, your vocabulary is monumental, acrimonious accusations rampant, personal insults degrading. Why are you not standing for leadership of the DA if you ‘know it all’? Did any of the previous leaders of the Opposition achieve what Helen Zille has today? SHE IS WOMAN! SHE IS BRAVE! SHE WILL OVERCOME! She needs a damn good holiday and then back to the benches to fight the good fight! ‘VIVA MAMA AFRIKA, VIVA HELEN ZILLA’
Thanks for the compliment.
When did Zille Become Mamma Africa, sorry dear, that title is taken, by Winnie Mandela, for 20 years now. I have some suggestions for Helen though:
Mamma Botox
Mamma Koeksuster
Mamma Western Cape
How very dare you?
PS she is not leader of the opposition, she is Premier of the Western Cape.
It seems the opposition has no leader.
PS she is not leader of the opposition, she is Premier of the Western Cape.

Troublemaker twit, give us a look at your profile (face) a picture says a thousand words.
Replying to your answer of 26 April ‘old, outdated, premise of racisism argument’ just shows up your uninformed, poor mental state. RACISM IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE THE CRUX OF THIS COUNTRIES WOES!!!even more current than swine fever. Always has been and will, into the 22nd century and beyond. The blacks don’t like the whites because they are more intelligent, more productive, more ambitious, have more ethics. The whites don’t like the blacks because (and there are a few that are the exception to the rule) they are basically lazy, dirty, have no ethics when it comes to crime, rape, fraud and corruption. (plenty of whites guilty of these accusations, I agree) The blacks have screwed (breeding) their way into poverty, homelessness, joblessness (you can load a boat just that full, and then it will sink)and then to crown it all, have also screwed their way into power in this country (look at the numbers!) Call me a racist, I call it as I see it! so do many others, but won’t speak up!
Dear Ellkay
This is the last time that I will publish your racist rants. I am intrigued by people like you, in that, while I have a high profile and public position (which is why no photo) and further that I spend most of my time in confrontation and debate, with educated people, in court, I never encounter insults and baseless claims like yours. Oh no, only safely behind the screen of your computer would you make such claims. You call me a twit, and uniformed, and in poor mental state. Insults I never hear face to face. Yet they come thick and fast from cyber misfits like yourself, along with shocking spelling, abysmal grammar and deeply ignorant attempts at argument.
Your comment drips with ignorance and bitterness and plain rudeness. Mostly, though, it suffers from one fundamental and unforgivable (in the context of debate) problem. It is unjustifiable, foolish and childish. Perhaps in your cyber paradise of monumental stupidity there is a debate about race. Perhaps there too, in the pitiful madness of your night, you have a point. In the real world, you don’t. Even worse you are off point, irrelevant and unspeakably stupid.
This site has nothing to do with debating racism. Its no longer a debate. Your allegations are without substance, they too, fly in the face of science, philosophy and simple common sense. You call it like you see it, you say, which reveals your lack of sight. There is no University, scientist, or educated person worth his salt that would entertain you.
You are a bumbling, ignorant, deeply stupid social misfit.
Leave philosophy to the clever people.
I really cannot believe that Ellkay actually believes her spewed rant that is sorely lacking in substance. Speaking of which … this is what is totally conspicuous by its absence … substance from within the rank and file of the DA …
Granted, this type of grandstanding is not exclusive to the DA but does exist within other parties or community gatherings/functions – all supposedly celebrating South African Freedom Day!
But what slays me, is how so many South Africans (clearly in support of the DA) suddenly crawl out from the rotten woodwork and applaud the election results. As I am one of those lacking in melanin, I tend to be privy to horrendous racist outbursts – lengthy diatribes and “supposedly” innocent racist humour – from people of all socio-economical classes, status, colour and ethnicity.
I have heard many a DA supporter claim that they are merely expressing their Freedom of Speech … gulp …
Being a radical (left) since 1967) – I too have faced many accusatory slants – outright suspicious directives (not necessarily to my face) but behind closed doors – all because many fail to see how one such as myself – always in the public eye – can remain so committed to the ideals of The Freedom Charter.
What do we still hear from Hellen Zille – but a continuous strategy not to accept – but to unseat newly elected Pres. Jacob Zuma … by any means possible …
If the DA is serious about helping South Africa grow and prosper – then in the name of all that is sane and just … put your money where your mouthes are and lead by example – not revert back to the draconian tactics of the old Nat regime.
I’m sorry, but the DA’s back and forth agenda is becoming so tiresome – totally outdated … that we need to get above – beyond their impeding modus operandi and forge ahead to achieving a true Rainbow Nation – A Place in The Sun for all of South Africa’s people … one we all can be proud of …
