(In Defence of American Imperialism)
If you read the European press, or any of its global mouthpieces and their allies of thought, you might have come across something they called world opinion. Apparently, it’s something that the world (outside of the US) believes, and to something they (the press) have immediate access to, no doubt due to superior European thought and technology, again.
This world jury that sits in judgement of the United States, 24/7, without sleep, due no doubt to differing time zones, and who report regularly their findings, feeling and opinions, get global coverage, and their findings, regardless of which deep dark hole they crawled out of are held up as evidence, nay, proof of the political positions of the free press who invented them.
And while world opinion shifts and alters, it never changes. For the past 30 years it has always been opposed to American Imperialism, which it sees in every conflict, and every problem from venereal disease in Shanghai to the Rain forests of Peru and the state of intergalactic space. All ills of the world, all problems all the time. Every road leads to Washington DC.
The KGB would have agreed.

But let us consider, not the folly of the existence of world opinion, along with other just as dubious claims, like what all women want etc. Lets for the purposes of argument consider that American Imperialism is alive and well, and that its hand rests alternatively gently or violently across the blue planet, with aims of command and conquer from here to Orion’s Belt, and lets for the sake of a dare, ask the question:
So what?
Imperialism – the extension or attempt thereof, of authority, influence, power by a country or the spirit, character and authority of an Empire.
The simple truth, dear reader, is that all countries wish the above; it is the aim of all nations in some or other form. It is, as well, the aim of all ideology, political, personal or religious. Now, there are those, in the abovementioned jury who no doubt believe that the US has aims of actual physical domination around the world. No doubt there are those who believe in gnomes and goblins too, we shall not consider what they think.
We shall consider the simple axiom, which is the thrust of this short piece, that the nature of our world is such that there will always be the powerful and the weak, right now we have the massive privilege of living in Pax Americana, an extraordinary period of peace, reigned over by the Red White and Blue, that there have been excesses, is an historical fact, but thank God its them and not some of the other protagonists waiting in the wings.
Perhaps you would prefer to be speaking German, or Swahili, or even worse, Mandarin. Perhaps you would like to wrap your women in dustbin bags, or swan around in saris and turbans, or throw dishcloths over your head.
Perhaps too, you yearn for public executions, beheadings, and Sunday lunch at the town’s dismembering of petty thieves. If the idea of controlled television, and state owned media thrill you, along with desert walks and lots of bad coffee, then there is always the threatening empire Islam to look forward to.
The great Chinese baby-killing machine is also a possibility. Complete with concentration camps and forced abortion, there’s a power you might like, just lock up your dog.
If you find yourself drinking coffee, and reading newspapers, cruising for porn, or just saying what you think, then dear reader, be grateful for the American founding fathers and the imperial interests of Mc World inc.
Next time you wander on the beach with your half naked partner, spare a thought for those who languish in the terrible jails of the Arab Emirates for kissing on dark beaches.
These values that you and I take for granted, these are the values that are upheld by the mighty guns that rule the high seas, and I for one am grateful.
Imperialism in the old English sense is dead, today Imperial powers rule by their values. I for one am prepared to overlook a great deal to keep them Yankee’s on the oceans and if I should one day be lost at sea, and a boat approaches, I’ll be praying that it’s flying the Red White and Blue.

God Bless Mc World.
